ATLANTA — Stacey Abrams said Tuesday morning she is not going to run against U. S. Sen. David Perdue next year, leading to more speculation that Georgia's former Democratic gubernatorial candidate might launch a long-shot White House in 2020 or set up a rematch with Brian Kemp, the man who defeated her last year to become Georgia governor.

Abrams made the announcement by her self-imposed deadline of April 30 via her Twitter account.

Abrams delivered a widely praised rebuttal to President Trump's state of the union address earlier this month. Abrams has made no secret of her desire to run for political office again. Abrams floated the possibility of a White House run in an interview with Cosmopolitan Magazine, in which she said her goals included a possible presidential campaign in 2028.

Abrams was seeking to become the nation's first African-American female governor. After becoming the nation's first African-American female candidate to earn her party's nomination for a major statewide office, Abrams made history again as the first black woman to deliver her party's rebuttal.

Abrams was one of several Democrats featured on the recent cover of TIME Magazine. She also fared well in a Democratic poll which showed her with more name recognition than U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar and Sherrod Brown.
