Subcontractor Who Fatally Fell 19 Floors From Atlanta Building ID'ed

The 20-year-old construction worker was not wearing a harness or helmet at the time of the deadly fall, Atlanta Police said.

ATLANTA, GA — There were no signs of foul play after a 20-year-old construction worker fell 19 floors from an Atlanta building, dying at the scene, fire officials said.

In releasing new details about the fatal fall, Atlanta Police identified the man as Lauinier Bonilla in an incident report. Patch has fully reviewed the report.

Police said officers responded around 10:45 a.m. Thursday to a building in the 300 block of Mitchell Street Southwest. Homicide detectives found no signs of foul play, Atlanta Fire Rescue stated in the report.

The investigating officer said Bonilla, who was a subcontractor, was not wearing a harness or helmet at the time of the fall. A man paying to park across the street from the incident was witness to the deadly fall, police said.

Bonilla was found face down on the ground with reddish stains, police said, adding a hard hat, a damaged cell phone and clear safety glasses were recovered at the scene.

He was wearing a red/maroon long-sleeved shirt, an orange vest, blue jeans and boots at the time of his death, police said. It is unknown what led to the fall.

The owner of the company where Bonilla was subcontracted told police he would report the fall to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, according to the report.

The Mitchell Street site is a component of the $5 billion Centennial Yards development, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Development plans include a 5,000-seat arena, hotel, retail buildings and a public plaza, the news outlet reported.
