Teen Football Star, 'Leader' Killed In GA Crash, Officials Say

The Georgia teenager's school remembered him as a boy who "had a smile that would light up the room."

PIKE COUNTY, GA — A 17-year-old football player was killed Saturday night in a crash at Highway 109, the Pike County Sheriff's Office said.

Pike County High School identified the high-school senior as Peyton Rivera via Facebook. Authorities did not release details of the crash, which occurred around 11:45 p.m.

“Peyton had a smile that would light up the room," Pike County Principal Kevin Huffstetler said in the school's Facebook post Sunday. "He was a leader on and off the field, and he made our school better just with his presence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, students, staff and community during this incredibly difficult time."

The Pike County Pirate football team confirmed Rivera, with jersey No. 5, was a member of the team. Rivera could play quarterback, linebacker and wide receiver, according to the current team roster.

"It’s hard to put into words the depth of sorrow as we remember our dear teammate, Peyton. At just 17, Peyton touched so many lives with an infectious spirit, boundless energy and a heart full of kindness. Peyton’s presence on our team was a source of inspiration and joy, and his absence leaves a void that will never be filled. As we mourn this heartbreaking loss, let us hold onto the cherished memories and the incredible impact Peyton had on us all. Please keep Peyton’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him in your thoughts and prayers," the Pike football team said Sunday in a Facebook post.

Family and friends assembled Monday at the scene of the deadly crash, where a cross decorated with Rivera's jersey number sat, Channel 2 Action News reported.

His dad, Johnny Rivera, told the TV outlet that Rivera "lived and breathed football." Rivera's step-mother, Jennifer Rivera, said in the report that the teenager was a significant member of the family and had a "million-dollar smile."

Pike County High said grief counselors were available to students and staff returning to school Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday weekend.

"Please keep the family, as well as the Pike County community, in your prayers," the school said in the Facebook post.

A vigil for Rivera is planned for 8 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Chapel, 68 Old Zebulon Road, in Zebulon.
