VIDEO: Floyd The Baby Gorilla Had His First Birthday At Zoo ATL
No cake was served, but little Floyd the gorilla seemed delighted by his presents: wood wool and ice block "cakes" packed with fruit.

ATLANTA, CA — Zoo staff in Atlanta celebrated a gorilla-sized birthday party last week, though the gorilla in question, named Floyd, still has a lot of growing up to do if he wants to before he reach the size of his ape family members.
On July 22, Floyd and his family members entered their enclosure to find a birthday makeover.
There were "cakes" — fruit frozen in ice blocks in the shape of a number one — as well Floyd's favorite toy, a pile of wood wool, into which the one-year-old gorilla flung himself with joy. The zoo captured the moment on video:

It wasn't just Floyd who got a taste of the birthday action. In a news release, the zoo noted that Floyd's aunt Sukari nabbed half a pineapple out of one of the ice "cakes."
Floyd boasts quite the pedigree. He was the 24th gorilla born at Zoo Atlanta, and he is the great-grandson of Ozzie, who at 59 years old was the oldest living gorilla on record. Floyd currently lives with his family troop, which includes his mother Lulu; father Taz; sister Andi; aunt Kudzoo; half-sister Merry; half-sister Mija; aunt Sukari; and half-sister Anaka.

Western lowland gorillas like Floyd are critically endangered in their native habitats in Western Africa. When he's grown to full size — which could take another 12 to 15 years — Floyd could tip the scale at around 400 pounds and 6 feet tall.
For now, though, Floyd looks like he's enjoying being a kid.
