Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:

  1. Airport security has caught so many individuals traveling with firearms at security checkpoints over the past three years that fines are in the millions. According to the Transportation Security Administration, passengers face an accumulated $52 million in penalties. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the top airport regarding the number of seized guns. In 2021 alone, security took almost 6,000 guns across the country. (WSB Atlanta)
  2. Two suspects shot an Atlanta woman during an attempted carjacking. According to officials, the woman was at a stop light when two men demanded to give them her car. One man shot at the car when she tried driving off, and the bullet hit her leg. The victim is in the hospital for treatment and is in stable condition; however, police are still looking for the suspects. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  3. A 12-year-old boy is collecting hats, gloves, scarves, and other winter attire for children in foster care or without permanent housing. Caden Jackson created his foundation Love and Protection eight years ago to collect and deliver donations to children across Georgia. Love and Protection donated over 500 items last year and is looking to exceed its record this year. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  4. Cheshire Bridge is now open after being shut down for over a year and a half. The city shut down and rebuilt the bridge after a natural gas fire occurred. The bridge will have four lanes in each direction when completely open, and all gas lines are now underground to deter a future gas fire. (WSB Atlanta)
  5. Atlanta mortgage rates have skyrocketed from 3.14 percent to 7.08 percent in the past year. Higher interest rates are to fight against inflation. Consumers are waiting to buy because interest rates negatively affect the market, lowering demand and home prices. Buyers will need a total household income of $116,890 before taxes to afford a home in the city. (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
