Here are the top three stories today in Augusta:

  1. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that occurred on Deans Bridge Road in Augusta early Friday morning. Authorities responded to the call around 4:35 a.m., at which time they discovered a woman who had been shot at least once; the victim was taken to the hospital and later died from her injuries. Limited details were available at the time of publication, and the incident remains under investigation. (The Augusta Chronicle)
  2. Augusta commissioners have approved $30 million in bonds to finance four SPLOST 8 projects. The projects — which include a new correctional institution in the county, along with major renovations at Dyess and Fleming Parks and the Newman Tennis Center — are set to break ground soon. All projects will require full commission approval to proceed with the bond sale. (WJBF-TV)
  3. Today (Saturday, May 13), the Georgia Cancer Center will hold its 5th annual Unite in the Fight Against Cancer Walk at Augusta University. The 1.5-mile walk aims to support cancer survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and raise funds to enhance patient care and support services. Though the event is free to attend, donations can be made on-site or online. (WJBF-TV)
