Here are the top three stories today in Augusta:
- The Augusta Commission voted 9-1 to rename Sammie Sias Way to Jamestown Lane on Tuesday; Commissioner Bobby Williams was the only one to vote no. The change will be effective immediately and comes in light of Sias being found guilty in July 2022 of mistreating children at the Jamestown Community Center. (WRDW)
- Tuesday Morning is beginning the process of closing its stores around the country, including its location in Augusta at 3241 Washington Road. The retailer began 49 years ago in 1974, and over the last three years, it has gone from around 700 locations to just 200. In addition to its Augusta location, it also had stroes in Alpharetta, Brunswick, Macon, Peachtree City, and Woodstock here in Georgia. (WRDW)
- The nearby city of North Augusta will be receiving its largest grant ever — about $7.6 million — from the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority to go towards planned sewer line renovations. North Augusta City Councilman Eric Presnell said of the grant's significance to the city, "That frees up money that would normally have to be spent somewhere else, to be able to go in and do some other projects that are needed." The city said that the sewer pipes are from the 1950s and are in need of major renovations due to damage from aging and general wear. (WJBF-TV)
