Brookhaven Police Department Goes Online, Patrols Streets

The city debuted the new 54-officer department before the public at Town Brookhaven on Wednesday morning.

Brookhaven's new 54-officer police department officially came online Wednesday, and the city marked the occasion with a ceremony at Town Brookhaven before officers and patrol cars finally hit the streets.

After the officers appeared for their first roll call, police Chief Gary Yandura gave each officer a "challenge coin" commonly issued within service organizations to commemorate the moment.

The officers hopped into their patrol cars at about 9:30 a.m. and made their way through Town Brookhaven with some of their DeKalb County police colleagues, who split off in a separate direction, symbolizing the city's new independence in the field of public safety.
