Buford Highway Brawl Features Mom, Daughter, Boyfriend, Witness

BROOKHAVEN, GA -- During the week of April 8-14, Brookhaven police responded to 1,887 calls which included 130 incident reports, 119 citations, and 34 arrests. Here's a sampling of those calls:

Saturday, April 13 – Disorderly Conduct, Buford Highway and Corporate Drive. An officer pulled behind a vehicle just sitting in the middle of the road on Corporate Boulevard. The officer honked his horn and the driver activated his turn signal but did not move. When the officer activated his lights, the vehicle pulled off and then pulled over. The driver was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. The driver was taken into custody for DUI and transported to DeKalb jail.

Thursday, April 11 – Burglary in progress, 1200 block of W. Nancy Creek. Police were dispatched to a possible burglary in progress. The homeowner received notifications from her security cameras and a neighbor saw a suspicious vehicle in the driveway. Upon entering the front door, police found multiple bags of trash in the hallway, the sound of a vacuum cleaner and people talking. It was a cleaning crew who advised they were contracted to clean the home by the homeowner. However, the homeowner had recently sold this home, and intended for the cleaning crew to clean his new home in Atlanta. When the cleaning crew arrived at the Brookhaven house, they found the door unlocked and began cleaning. The new homeowner of the Brookhaven house was very understanding, complemented the crew on the cleanliness of her home, and collected the crews’ contact information for future business.

Wednesday, April 10 – Theft by receiving, Clairmont Road and Skyland Drive. A stolen Hyundai Santa Fe was reported several times on Brookhaven’s License Plate Reader cameras. Units flooded the area of the most recent hit and the vehicle was located inside the parking lot in the 1000 block of Barone Avenue. The vehicle was blue-lighted and the two occupants complied with the officer’s commands. During the investigation, officers received info from the driver that he was supposed to extend his contract but had to transfer some funds. He thought the rental car company was going to contact him to follow up. He was arrested, and the vehicle was impounded.

Wednesday. April 10 – Multiple incidents, 3200 Buford Highway. Officers were dispatched regarding a fight call. The suspect was fighting with her boyfriend in a parking lot. She was the aggressor, per the witness’ statement. The suspect’s mother arrived on the scene to take the suspect home. The suspect and the mother started to fight. A witness used her cellphone to record the altercation. The suspect, impaired by alcohol, the boyfriend and the mother confronted the
witness. The suspect requested that the witness stop recording the incident. The suspect
snatched the witness’ phone and threw the phone in the grass. The witness and the suspect
started to fight. The mother joined in and struck the witness with a belt. The witness received
injuries to her finger due to her fingernails being pulled off.

The suspect and the mother were arrested. The suspect was charged with robbery, simple
battery and battery. The mother was charged with simple battery. Due to a small laceration the
suspect sustained from the fight with the boyfriend, she was transported to a local hospital. The
boyfriend fled the scene upon the arrival of police.

Wednesday, April 10 – City Ordinance Violation, 4000 Block of Peachtree Road. Police responded to a loitering call. The offender was in a state of intoxication evidenced by having soiled his clothing while causing a disturbance at the location. He was arrested and taken to jail.

Wednesday, April 10 – Traffic Offense/Marijuana Possession, Peachtree Road and Colonial Drive. Police conducted a tag check and a traffic stop was conducted when the registration returned expired. The officer noticed the strong smell of marijuana, but the driver denied being in possession of marijuana. When he exited the vehicle, a jar of marijuana fell to the ground from his lap. Two bowls were also located underneath the driver’s seat and were seized for destruction.
