Karen Handel Launches Comeback Bid In 6th District
Karen Handel lost to Lucy McBath last fall in a huge Congressional upset. Now, she's one of several candidates challenging McBath in 2020.
ATLANTA -- Former metro Atlanta congresswoman Karen Handel said she is running for her old seat in Congress on Monday. Handel said she is running to reclaim Georgia's 6th congressional district, a seat she lost last fall to Democrat Lucy McBath in one of the nation's biggest midterm upsets. Handel won the seat in 2015 in a special election that became the nation's most expensive Congressional election in history, defeating Democrat Jon Ossoff, only to lose the seat to McBath just over a year later.
The seat had become vacant when Tom Price joined President Donald Trump's cabinet as secretary of health and human services. Price later resigned the office, becoming the first of several Trump cabinet members to depart.
Handel is the latest Republican to challenge McBath, whose seat has been targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee as one of 55 Democrat-held House seats to flip next year.
