Man Arrested After Suicide Threat, Gunfire, Police Chase: BPD

Brookhaven police arrested a man who they say was threatening suicide before firing at least one gunshot in an apartment and running away.

BROOKHAVEN, GA β€” A man was arrested Saturday after Brookhaven police say he threatened to commit suicide, fired a gunshot in an apartment and led cops on a chase before he was apprehended.

Around 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Brookhaven Police Department officers responded to a report of a man armed with a gun inside the Sierra Gardens apartment complex at 3649 Buford Highway. Police said the man was threatening suicide and fired at least one round inside the apartment, which went through the floor.

As police arrived, the man ran into the wooded area behind the apartment complex. Police said he fired at least two additional shots, and BPD officers set up a perimeter around the area to begin searching for him.

Negotiators from the North Metro Crisis Negotiation Team and BPD investigators remained in contact with the suspect, as well as a clinician from BPD's Mental Health Co-Responder program.

Investigators learned he was barricaded inside an apartment at the Esquire Apartments at 3102 Buford Highway. Members of the North Metro SWAT team arrested the man, whose name is not being released at this time, around 2 p.m Saturday.

No one was injured during the incident, and the man did not fire any additional rounds once police found him at the second complex, police said. No officers fired their weapons.
