Man Shot In Brookhaven Shopping Plaza (UPDATED)

Incident happened early Sunday at Northeast Plaza on Buford Highway.

BROOKHAVEN, GA -- A man was wounded in a shooting outside a Brookhaven shopping plaza over the weekend, police said.

The incident happened about 3 a.m. Sunday at Northeast Plaza on Buford Highway, Brookhaven police spokesman Maj. Brandon Gurley told Patch in an email.

Police descended on the area after receiving calls about an armed person in the parking lot outside Acapulco Mart.

The incident began when a man "became extremely intoxicated and at one point fell to the ground," police said in a news release.

A confrontation ensued between the man, the establishment's manager and a security guard. At some point, the drunken patron was brought outside, where he was heard saying that he "had something" for the workers inside the business.

He was later seen trying to enter the building with a pistol in hand, police said. He was stopped by an employee, who also produced a gun and warned the man to leave. The worker then opened fire on the man, causing him to flee in a white truck.

The man was found nearby in some apartments in the 2500 block of Northeast Expressway after he called 911 about 5:30 a.m. to report that he had been shot. When officers arrived, they determined that the man had been wounded in the shoulder and wrist. They also found a toy gun or replica that they believe was used in the incident.

Investigators have located all parties involved and are working on the case, Gurley said.

The investigation continues as charges may be filed in the incident, police said.
