Hazardous Weather Potential Through Sunday Evening Across Atlanta Metro

Flash flood, tornado possible as storms move through the region, according to National Weather Service. Large tornado in Albany, Ga.

ATLANTA, GA — Severe thunderstorms may bring dangerous conditions across the Atlanta region Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service. The threat includes tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds for portions of central Georgia.

A tornado watch is in effect for the entire Atlanta metropolitan area through 8 p.m. A flash flood watch is in effect for much of the area through this evening, according to the weather service. A wind advisory is scheduled to begin in the overnight hours and last through most of Monday.

Locally heavy rainfall will be likely. Local flooding of low-lying and flood prone areas will be possible.

Strong, gusty winds behind the storm system are expected Monday. A wind advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. Monday until 7 p.m. Monday. Sustained winds will be up to 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Some winds may remain gusty into Monday night, according to the weather service.

"These winds may break tree branches and down weaker trees, particularly those in saturated soils due to the recent heavy rainfall," reads a weather service statement. "Unsecured outdoor items may be blown around."
