Police Question Story of Alleged Robbery Victim (Update)

Atlanta police say they're certain the Uber driver accused of beating up the victim was not involved with the incident.

ATLANTA, GA -- Atlanta police are questioning the story of a man who said he was beaten, robbed, and thrown down a drainage pipe in Buckhead by an Uber driver over the weekend.

A police statement released Tuesday afternoon says investigators “are certain that the Uber driver did not participate in any robbery,” noting he was on another trip when the alleged robbery took place. Furthermore, police haven’t concluded that the victim was robbed at all.

Police said that security camera footage showed the victim walking into the alleged crime scene, a parking lot in the 3400 block of Peachtree Road, without being followed or trailed by anyone.

Security camera footage also showed the victim walking down the creek adjacent to the drain pipe he said he was tossed into after he was robbed.

The victim also admitted to firefighters rescuing him that he had been drinking, the police statement says.

The victim originally told police the driver picked him up on Irby Avenue after he left Churchill’s Pub about 2:45 a.m. Sunday. The driver allegedly changed course and took the victim to the parking lot.

In the report, the victim said he was pulled from the car, beaten unconscious, and then thrown down a nine foot drain pipe. He told officers whoever beat him up stole his iPhone 6, $250 in cash, and his Wells Fargo bank card.
