American Cancer Society Seeks Volunteers for Cancer Resource Center At Redmond Regional Hospital in Rome

The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers for its Cancer Resource Center at Redmond Regional Hospital’s Bluebird Wing in Rome. It provides northwest Georgia residents with community-based cancer support.

The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Resource Centers (CRCs) are staffed by trained volunteers who proactively reach out to patients and caregivers in the communities to offer assistance. If a patient has needs, volunteers assist them with contacting the American Cancer Society or WellStar professionals. Volunteers are also able to provide referrals to external resources that may help meet patients’ needs.

“The most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer for the CRC is knowing it doesn’t take a special skill to touch the lives of cancer patients. It just takes the willingness to be there with them and to help them with information and support,” says Bill Gregory, a CRC Volunteer.

“Our Cancer Resource Centers provide community-based support to cancer patients and their families and caregivers, and we need more volunteers to provide these critical services locally” says Lindsi Pearson, the American Cancer Society’s Area Executive Director for Northwest Georgia. “There is a wealth of information and support offered at the CRCs, and the centers are conveniently located to make it easy for cancer patients and caregivers to get the help they need.”

Volunteers are cross-trained by both Redmond Regional Hospital and the American Cancer Society to ensure they are knowledgeable about the services available in the community. Trainings occur on regular basis, and there is an open enrollment for applications.

Through the Cancer Resource Centers, patients have immediate access to free programs and services needed – whether it is a ride to treatment, a free high quality wig for a chemotherapy patient, financial assistance or help through support services offered by the medical centers where the centers are located.

“With the CRCs, we have now have the ability to prevent patients from being diagnosed and then going home feeling overwhelmed, scared and alone. This on-site program is a gateway to providing the much needed personal assistance and information those patients need,” Pearson adds.
