Dr. Debbie Wallsmith To Speak at 'Barbacoa' on April 6

Dr. Debbie Wallsmith, preservation specialist with the Department of Natural Resources, will speak at "Barbacoa," an event at the Etowah Indian Mounds sponsored by Friends of the Mounds and the Etowah Valley Historical Society.

Proceeds will be used for roof repair of the daub and wattle house, a reconstruction of an original Indian house excavated at the Etowah Indian Mounds site in the 1950's and 60's.

Wallsmith began working for DNR's Parks & Historic Sites Division as Curator of Collections in 2000. She has spent the past 10 years focusing on interpretation of the PRHS cultural resources and has participated in the development of museums at the Little White House, Fort McAllister, Sweetwater Creek and Magnolia Springs.

She has also acted as liaison to production companies filming on PRHS properties.

Debbie grew up in British Columbia, Canada where she earned a BA and MA in Archaeology from Simon Fraser University. She then moved to Dallas, TX, where she received an MA and PhD in Anthropology from Southern Methodist University. She is interested in stone tool technology and has worked in Tanzania, Ghana, South Africa and Egypt.

"Barbacoa" begins at 6 p.m. with wine and a silent auction, storytelling by interpretive expert Gary Greene at the bonfire, a smoked meat meal by Johnny Mitchell, hayrides around the torch lighted mounds, door prizes and favors as well as a talk by Wallsmith. 

Tickets are $20 each; children are welcome at the same price. The event is set for April 6, 2013, at the Etowah Indian Mounds in Cartersville. 

Purchase tickets in advance at the Mounds on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or at the EVHS Office in the 1903 Gold Domed Bartow County Courthouse in Cartersville on Tuesdays through Fridays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. 

Can’t pick up a ticket? Make reservations by phone by calling the EVHS Office at 770-606-8862 through April 3 and pay at the event. 

Attendance is limited due to facility restrictions. Make ticket arrangements early.
