Bartow BOE To Eye Public Participation Changes

The Bartow County Board of Education is considering policy changes that would make it easier for parents and constituents to address the school board at public meetings, The Daily Tribune News reports.

Last night, newcomer Fred Kittle, who beat out Wanda Cagle Gray for the Post 4 seat, asked for further discussion following Superintendent John Harper's recommendation for more flexibility in the policy, according to videos of the meeting published by BartowPolitics.com.

Currently, parents and constituents who wish to speak during a 6 p.m. work session are required to sign up at the Central Office by 5:15 p.m.

Parent Paige Martin, who addressed the board last night, asked what parents can do to help keep local schools safe, according to BartowPolitics.com and the Tribune. Superintendent John Harper's suggestion: Volunteer in your child's school and be an extra set of eyes watching over the safety of our children.

The board also selected its chairman and vice chairman. Davis Nelson retained his chairmanship by a vote of 3 to 1, with Kittle opposing. Kittle was elected vice chairman.
