Explosive Found In Cartersville Crash Probe Rendered Inoperable

The Cartersville man was arrested on drug charges.

CARTERSVILLE, GA — Police have identified a man who was accused of carrying a small inoperable explosive in his car trunk Thursday near North Erwin Street.

Richard Bailey, of Cartersville, is charged on suspicion of criminal possession of an explosive device, driving under the influence-drugs, possession of schedule II controlled substances, drugs to be kept in original container and possession of methamphetamine by ingestion, Cartersville Police said.

The explosive device was found around 8:15 a.m. during a crash investigation at North Erwin, police said. Police searched Bailey's car after arresting him; that is when the device was found in the car's trunk, police said.

Roads were closed. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the device was explosive and rendered it inoperable, police said.

Bailey was taken to the Bartow County Jail, police said.
