New Writing Program Fosters Competition in Bartow Schools

Competition is good for learning, as fifth graders in Sarah Rainey’s class at Taylorsville Elementary discover when they compete in English-Language Arts.

Students love using the new Zaner-Bloser Writing Program purchased by the Bartow County School System. 

“This program helps to sharpen students’ writing skills across all genres,” Rainey said. 

The web-based program combines interactive games, rubrics, mini-lessons and videos, allowing students to practice writing and grammar skills using SmartBoards and other types of technology. 

This week student practiced finding simple subjects and predicates. 

“It helps us with ELA and it is fun,” said student Scotty Smith. 

“Normally, I don’t like to learn, but I like learning through this game,” said student Noah Borgelt. 

Students wanted to compete boys against the girls. 

“I think it is interesting to see what answers we choose as a group. If we disagree, we figure it out,” commented student Eryn Harkins. 

“Because students are having so much fun, they pay attention and are more focused,” commented Rainey. "It is great.”
