Here are the top five stories in Cartersville today:

  1. Georgia Power's Plant Bowen, located near Cartersville, announced an upcoming coal ash beneficial use project. Nine million tons of stored ash from the planet will be excavated and reused in concrete, which will help build various projects across Georgia and the Southeast. Infrastructure installation at Plant Bowen is expected to begin immediately, with ash removal scheduled to start by 2024. (WRGA)
  2. The Bartow History Museum invites the community to its upcoming presentation, Scales and Tales: The Importance of Reptiles in Native American Cultures of the Southeast, today (Jun. 30) at 7 p.m. Attendees will learn about the prominent role of reptiles in the artwork, legends, and traditional knowledge of Southeast indigenous people — and even meet some of the real-life creatures that inspired them. The event is free for BHM members and $7 for non-members; tickets are available at the link. (Bartow History Museum)
  3. The Cartersville Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in finding a missing woman. Leah Penny, reported missing on Jun. 22 and last seen at a Cartersville QuikTrip, is said to be homeless and to suffer from schizophrenia. Anyone with contact or information on Penny is asked to contact the CPD at 770-382-2526. (WRGA)
  4. Cartersville and other cities in the Atlanta metro could see showers and thunderstorms over the 4th of July weekend. According to AccuWeather reports, heavy and gusty thunderstorms are likely Friday morning through Monday night. Independence Day proper is expected to be partly sunny, with a 50 percent chance of showers and storms. (Atlanta Patch)
