The Pittsburgh Neighborhood gets some Good Press in the SaportaReport
The Pittsburgh community is a historic neighborhood that runs along Metropolitan Pkwy.

While reading the SaportaReport today I saw a wonderful article giving the true history and importance of the Pittsburgh community by written by columnist, DR. LECONTΓ DILL, who is research instructor at the Morehouse School of Medicineβs Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine, and former fellow with the Satcher Health Leadership Institute.
In the article, Ms. Dill, explains how the neighborhood was founded by African Americans in the late 1800's:
Pittsburgh is one of Atlantaβs oldest neighborhoods, established in 1883 on 554 acres of land by African-American laborers. In the aftermath of the Civil War, Pittsburgh became an affordable refuge for working-class families fleeing the wrath of the Ku-Klux-Klan in the counties south of Atlanta.

The neighborhood got its name because the nearby rail yards were so polluted that it resembled the steel mills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. McDaniel Street thrived as Pittsburghβs βMain Street,β as segregation confined African-American businesses to this thoroughfare.
This is really an educational and eye-opening article about a neighborhood that is often too much in the news for what bad things that happen in and around it.Β I suggest you read it and leave your comments here at Cascade Patch.

As someone who gets over to that area and Perkerson Park quite often, I can tell you that there is a very vibrant community and group of neighbors over there that have taken pride into their community and are cleaning it up.
