Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:
- On Sep. 20, Forsyth County residents expressed concerns and urged the School Board to maintain school attendance zones rather than proceed with redistricting plans affecting several elementary schools. The draft redistricting plans addressed overcrowding and populating the new Midway Elementary which would impact students at multiple schools. Residents voiced worries about increased traffic, disruption of established friendships, and negative impacts on school communities, urging the board to reconsider the proposals. The School Board will discuss public input and review staff recommendations on the redistricting in October before final approval. (Appen Media)
- Over the weekend, on Sep. 23, the Historical Society of Cumming/Forsyth County worked on the historic Harrell Cemetery. Multiple people banded together, including Professor Melissa Schindler from the University of Northern Georgia and South Forsyth High School history teacher Chase Wilbanks along with some of his students to help clean and identify headstones and burial sites. Together, they made significant progress in the project, including the discovery of several previously unknown graves. (Historical Society of Cumming/Forsyth County via Facebook)
