Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. The University of North Georgia (UNG) marked a significant milestone by hosting a beam signing ceremony at its Cumming campus, celebrating the placement of the final piece of steel frame for the upcoming 27,300-square-foot expansion. The expansion project is quickly progressing, and the facility is scheduled to open in time for the fall semester of 2024. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
  2. Forsyth County Public Library (FCPL) is excited to host the 26th annual Manhattan Short International Film Festival, showcasing 10 short films from international artists. FCPL is one of only three venues in Georgia chosen for this event, and it's a rare opportunity to see these films for free without traveling far. The library is offering six different screenings for adults only, with a total runtime of two hours and 20 minutes, allowing viewers to vote for their favorite film.   3. K9 Maverick of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office has received a bullet and stab protective vest through a generous donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a charity established in 2009, dedicated to providing protective vests and assistance to law enforcement dogs across the United States.   4. The Forsyth County Fire Department is hosting Trunk or Treat 2023 on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Cumming Fairgrounds Parking Lot. The event is designed for children and will include Halloween-themed safety tips.   5. Hundreds of people in Forsyth County came together to create a memorable fifth birthday celebration for a foster child. The community arranged a parade featuring race cars, monster trucks, and motorcycles that passed through the neighborhood to make the child's birthday special.
