Clear The Shelters, Again: LifeLine Offers Free Adoptions

LifeLine and Best Friends Animal Society partnered to help clear the shelters with free adoptions at all LifeLine shelters from Sept. 13-19.

ATLANTA, GA — As more people are experiencing financial crises and have to surrender their pets, up to 60 animals are arriving daily at LifeLine Animal Project's DeKalb and Fulton shelters — which are also experiencing staff shortages and are unable to transport as many animals due to COVID-19 restrictions, according to Lara Hudson, director of LifeLine's Fulton County Animal Services.

Needless to say, it's been a brutal summer for metro Atlanta animal shelters.

That's why LifeLine and Best Friends Animal Society are partnering to help clear the shelters with fee-waived adoptions from Sept. 13-19, made possible in part due to a $10,000 grant from BFAS to help cover the free adoptions, according to a news release. Adoptions include the pet's vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery and microchipping.

“Best Friends is happy to provide a grant to LifeLine Animal Project to help find Atlanta area pets homes,” said Fraily Rodriguez, director of Best Friends Animal Society's Lifesaving Centers - East. “If you’ve been considering adopting, now is the time due to a decrease in pet adoptions in shelters across the country coupled with a seasonal increase in animal intake. Add in a dramatic decrease in staff levels at shelters, which is causing reduced operations and a lower capacity for animals, and you can understand why shelters are struggling. We hope the Atlanta community will step up now for the animals.”

This is the fourth time LifeLine has pleaded with the community to help clear its shelters since June, either through waived adoption fees or a call for fostering a fur baby.
