DeKalb And Decatur Schools Make Decision On Wednesday Classes: Hurricane Irma

As metro Atlanta recuperates from the effects of Hurricane Irma, City of Decatur Schools have decided on classes for Wednesday, Sept. 13.

ATLANTA, GA -- As metro Atlanta recuperates from the effects of Hurricane Irma, City of Decatur Schools and the DeKalb County School District have decided to cancel classes for Wednesday, Sept. 13. Schools around Atlanta were weighing late Tuesday whether to follow suit after the area was rocked with strong storms and wind, causing power outages and unsafe roads.

"All DeKalb Co. schools & offices to remain CLOSED on Wed. Sept. 13. No employees are to report," the DeKalb schools system said on Twitter late Tuesday. (SIGN UP: Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Or, if you have an iPhone, download the free Patch app.)

"Due to power outages in our schools and road closures, City Schools of Decatur will be closed on Wednesday, September 13, 2017," the system said on its website. "All scheduled after school activities and events are canceled Wednesday, September 13, 2017. The Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 12 has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 8:00 pm."

After streaking through Florida, Irma struck Georgia Monday, bringing heavy rain, destructive winds, flash flooding, and effectively shutting down the metro area.

Also on Sunday, Gov. Nathan Deal expanded a state of emergency for all of Georgia's 159 counties. He also announced that all state government offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday for all employees except essential personnel.

As the storm left Georgia, South Carolina was expected to experience high winds and heavy rains, raising the possibility of several hazards, including downed trees and power lines.
