LifeLine Prepares For Intake Surge, Waives Adoption Fees
The DeKalb and Fulton shelters are taking in up to 50 animals daily, and looming evictions threaten to bring an unprecedented surge of pets.
ATLANTA, GA — LifeLine Animal Project's DeKalb and Fulton Animal Services shelters are full for the third time in two months, and pending evictions could bring an unprecedented intake of dogs and cats.
To prepare for the surge, LifeLine is waiving adoption fees on all pets from this Friday through Sunday, Aug. 13-15, a news release said. All pets at LifeLine's three shelters may be adopted for no charge and will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped.
This is the second time LifeLine has waived adoption fees because of full shelters since June, and the third time the shelters have reached capacity. The shelter also sent out a plea for foster volunteers in July.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's latest eviction moratorium through Oct. 3 provides protection for some, it only applies to areas with high COVID-19 transmission rates, and local courts have discretion as to whether eviction hearings can proceed.
However, DeKalb County has an eviction ban in place, which DeKalb Superior Court Judge Asha Jackson ordered July 30 and expires after 60 days.

DeKalb Shelter Director Kerry Moyers-Horton said the eviction crisis could still be catastrophic for LifeLine’s already full shelters, especially once DeKalb's ban expires.
“When people lose their homes, pets end up in shelters,” she said. “Since our shelters are full, we have nowhere left to put these animals. Please consider adopting a new pet to help keep Atlanta’s animals safe.”
Fulton Shelter Director Lara Hudson added that community support makes all the difference.
“We cannot save all of the animals in our care without the community’s help. If you adopt or foster today, you are truly saving a life,” Hudson said.
The three participating shelters are located at:
- DeKalb County Animal Services, 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Chamblee
- Fulton County Animal Services, 860 Marietta Blvd. NW, Atlanta
- LifeLine Community Animal Center, 3180 Presidential Drive, Atlanta
