Here are the top five stories in Douglasville today:
- A Douglasville woman has been arrested for stealing a $50,000 watch from a residence in Powder Springs. Kayla Phillips, 22, was taken into custody last Friday after using a crowbar to break into the home of Ahmad Grandberry and stealing the watch at gunpoint. Phillips is being held at the Cobb County Jail without bail and faces multiple charges, including burglary, home invasion, and aggravated assault. (Yahoo! News)
- A student from Alexander High School in Douglasville has taken home the top prize in the National Braille Institute's Annual Braille Challenge. Freshman Christopher Morgan competed against over 1,200 students from across the continent to demonstrate his fundamental braille skills, which included tests in reading comprehension, spelling, speed and accuracy, proofreading, and charts and graphs. Morgan was awarded a personalized braille trophy, a cash prize, and a braille technology device worth over $5,000. (Douglas County School System)
- An educator from Douglasville is one of 84 teachers nationwide to be named to the Society for Science's Advocate Program for the 2022-2023 school year. As an advocate, Todd Ireland of 100 Black Men of Douglasville, Inc. will receive a $3,000 stipend from the program. The program helps students from underserved and underrepresented races or ethnicities and low-income households gain access to STEM career pathways. (PR Newswire)
- The City of Douglasville has a critical need for blood donations. On Tuesday, Aug. 30, the Douglasville Police Department is hosting a blood drive from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the community room. All donors will receive a $10 e-gift card from a merchant of their choice and be entered into a drawing to win free gas for a year. (Douglasville Police Department via Facebook)
- A student from Douglasville was one of four athletes at Mississippi State University to be named to the SEC Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Watch List. Midfielder Macey Hodge is entering her third year on the team and is one of three captains for the MSU squad. This is the first time she has been named to the watch list, which was announced Wednesday by the Southeastern Conference. (Picayune Item)
