The City of Douglasville and the American chestnut tree are forever linked to each other in Douglasville’s history. The original name for the area Douglasville now encompasses was “Skint Chestnut”.  History tells us the Native Americans cut the bark from a well-placed American chestnut tree to use as a landmark. Today, the official city seal of Douglasville even contains a skint American chestnut tree as part of its imagery.

In honor of Arbor Day and to celebrate efforts by the Douglasville/Douglas County Friends of the American Chestnut (an effort led by long-time resident, Dot Padgett and several local organizations including Keep Douglasville Beautiful) to restore this native tree to our area, five American chestnut trees were planted at Foxhall Resort.  These trees are part of a research project being conducted by Berry College through the American Chestnut Foundation and will be carefully studied and maintained by Foxhall.

Mayor Pro Tem Terry Miller spoke at the event saying, "We are committed to environmental protection.  And as a member of Tree City USA, we are committed to the preservation of trees."
