Here are the top five stories in Douglasville today:
- Several schools in the Douglas County School System, including Chapel Hill Elementary, recently celebrated Grandparents' Day, where nearly 350 grandparents and grandfriends gathered to be honored. The event featured activities such as a school library tour, a book fair, a photo booth, and a breakfast provided by the PTA, creating cherished memories and celebrating the special bond between generations. Additionally, the Douglas County Senior Services supports grandparents raising grandchildren through support groups and resources, recognizing the vital role they play in their grandchildren's lives. - Two local road projects in Douglas County, namely the Lee Road extension and widening projects, have received nearly $2 million in federal funding approval. Congressman David Scott (GA-13) announced this funding, indicating that it was approved through majority votes in the House Appropriations Subcommittees and will be included in the full Senate and House Appropriations Committee bills. - The Douglas County Board of Elections and Registration is extending its National Voter Registration Day activities into a week-long initiative to Sep. 22. During this time, representatives will be present at the front of the Courthouse on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. to assist with voter registration. - A Villa Rica man, Alberto Vazquez, aged 43, has been convicted of rape, aggravated sodomy, and false imprisonment charges related to a 2020 incident at a residence in Douglasville. The verdict was reached by a Douglas County jury on Aug. 31, and the case was tried before Superior Court Judge Cynthia Adams. Ultimately, Vazquez was found guilty of these charges against his estranged wife. (Subscription: Douglas County Sentinel)
