Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:
- A Douglas County man, Paulo Ivan Garcia, was arrested in connection to a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of two people in Grant County, KS, in October 2019. Garcia was identified as the driver of a semi-truck that collided with the father-son duo and then stole a pickup truck from a witness before fleeing the scene. He was also wanted for a federal supervised release violation from Wichita and was taken to the Douglas County Jail after the arrest. (Fox4 KC)
- The Douglasville Police Department is hosting a Community Yard Sale on Saturday, Sep. 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will take place on the front lawn, rain or shine, and offer 12-foot by 12-foot grass areas for participants to sell their items. - Down the road, Cobb County police are on the lookout for a driver involved in a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian on Monday night near the intersection of Floyd Road and Maran Lane at around 10:30 p.m. The pedestrian was crossing Floyd Road outside the crosswalk when they were struck by an unknown northbound vehicle, which briefly stopped before fleeing the scene. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and their identity has not been disclosed by officials yet. (Fox5 Atlanta)
- Douglas County Schools Superintendent Trent North will be overseeing the return of students and teachers to classrooms on Wednesday for the start of the 2023-2024 school year. The district has hired over 200 new teachers, making it the 17th-largest school system in the state of Georgia. (Subscription: Douglas County Sentinel)
- A former Douglasville drug store employee, Gabrielle Sharp, is facing charges of acquiring a controlled substance by forgery and theft by shoplifting. The charges stem from the alleged theft of 200 narcotic pills from a store in the area. Sharp is awaiting trial. (Subscription: Douglas County Sentinel)

- In case you missed it, Douglasville Community Theater is preparing for a production of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" at the 4YourOccasions Event Venue in October. The casting for the nine roles was completed in June, and the performances are scheduled for Oct. 20-22. Tickets went on sale in July. (Subscription: Douglas County Sentinel)
- Registrations are now open for the Dose of Douglasville Citizen's Academy, a 10-week program providing an inside look at city government and its various departments. Participants must be residents, workers, or business owners in the City of Douglasville and must be 18 years or older.
