Douglasville Jail To Be Demolished For Amphitheater, Green Space

DOUGLASVILLE, GA -- Officials from the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia State Department of Natural Resources notified the City of Douglasville Wednesday that no further action is required for environmental assessments of the underground storage tanks buried within the Old Jail Site.

For the City, this means they may proceed in demolishing the existing building to make way for the highly anticipated amphitheater, green space, and mixed-use development that will replace the Old Jail.

The old Douglas County Jail was vacated back in 2012 when the new adult detention facility was established at its current location off Earl D Lee Blvd. The Old Jail has been a popular site for film production since its closure which has housed big-name productions in the downtown area such as Logan Lucky, MacGyver, All Eyez on Me and many more.

“We are delighted to receive this great news,” Mayor Rochelle Robinson said. “Although we are still waiting for results of the environmental assessments at the Old Mill Site, I cannot wait to begin to see the dirt moving at the Old Jail Site.”

The next step for City staff is to develop and issue a request for proposal for competitive bids for the demolition and cleanup of the site.

As staff develops the demolition and cleanup request for proposal, they will also work with their Downtown Master Plan consultant, TSW, to finalize their findings from phase one of the plan. The Douglasville City council will discuss these next steps at their regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, May 16 at the Douglasville Conference Center.
