Here are the top five stories in Douglasville today:
- Macey Hodge of Mississippi State Soccer has received recognition from the United Soccer Coaches (USC) as one of their NCAA Division I Midfielders to watch this season, being among a select group of 38 midfielders acknowledged nationally. Hodge, a Douglasville native with an impressive record of 50 consecutive starts, was previously honored by USC as a member of the All-Southeast Region Team. In the 2022 season, Hodge's contributions included significant playing time, aiding the team in achieving shutout victories and securing their first-ever SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament wins, leading to her inclusion in the All-SEC Second Team. - Douglas County School System welcomed back students and teachers with enthusiasm on Aug. 2. Preceding this, a Back to School Kickoff event on Jul. 22 offered educational resources and community connections, benefiting over 5,000 attendees. The event not only distributed school supplies to 2,280 students but also provided access to various community services, reinforcing the commitment to academic success and student well-being. - Get ready for a free Back-to-School Bash featuring Uptown Funk, a tribute to Bruno Mars, at the Baseball Fields in Hunter Park on Aug. 19 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Celebrate the new school year with live music and food trucks, and remember to bring your chairs or blankets. - The O'Neal Plaza will be hosting a "Goodbye Summer Beach Trivia and Bingo Night" event on Aug. 25 from 6:30-9:00 p.m., for an evening of beach-themed trivia, bingo, great prizes, and delicious food. The event also marks the initiation of the Entertainment District, allowing participating restaurants to sell alcohol for consumption within the designated area. - Joahan Aragon, a resident of nearby Hiram, faces multiple serious charges, including firing shots at police officers during their investigation at a location in Smyrna and possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute. Using a Glock 17 pistol, Aragon, 21, allegedly fired multiple rounds, one of which was directed toward the officers, before being found with marijuana, a scale, plastic bags, and cash in his vehicle. His charges encompass possession of a firearm during a crime, intent to distribute marijuana, and aggravated assault against a public safety officer, and he was released from custody after posting a $30,000 bond.
