Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:
- On Sunday, Jul. 30 the Douglas County Sheriff's Office shared that there has been an uptick in scammers targeting local residents. Specifically, they shared reports of various phone calls and emails threatening residents with prosecution for failing to comply with jury service in federal or state courts, pressuring Douglasville residents to provide confidential data. The Sheriff's Office is urging residents to never provide confidential data over the phone or email, and to look up information about state and federal courts should they have questions about jury service. - In case you missed it - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is continuing an investigation of a shooting that occurred between deputies and a man threatening family members with a firearm on Jul. 26. The police were dispatched to the scene when a Douglasville man threatened members of his family with a firearm. The suspect opened fire on authorities when the police arrived, and was wounded in the fight. He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and has since been released into the custody of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. (Daily Advent)
- The new school year might be right around the corner, but the Douglas County Public Library has tons of events for kids to make the most of the last days of summer. This week, the popular Teen Hangout Club series will return with a Nintendo Switch Tournament on Aug. 3 at 5:00 p.m. This free event will feature a Switch competition, arts and crafts stations, a movie screening, and snacks, and is open to ages 11 and up. - The Douglasville Community Theater recently announced its upcoming Fall production, "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner," which begins on Oct. 20. This stage adaptation of the iconic film tells the story of a progressive white couple whose proud liberal sensibilities are put to the test when their daughter brings her black fiancee home to meet the family.
