Scoops Sweets and Treats Looking to Locate in Downtown Douglasville

It’s official! Scoops Sweets and Treats are looking to locate in historic downtown Douglasville. As noted on their website, Scoops is more than your average ice cream shop. With more than 32 flavors of ice cream, along with homemade fudge, to the fabulous specialty cakes, to the chocolate and candy located from wall to wall, you will know that you have come to sweet tooth heaven.

“We are beyond excited about this huge opportunity for downtown Douglasville,” said Douglasville Downtown Development Authority Director Patrice R. Williams. “We envision a great partnership with the company, as they appreciate the charm and quality of life downtown offer residents and visitors alike. We can expect that any building they purchase in our downtown will be enhanced and continue to be a major part of our community for generations to come.”

Recently, the Douglasville Main Street Manager, Downtown Development Authority Director and DDA Board Member, Jeff Merbeck, traveled to downtown Covington to tour Scoops Sweets and Treats.

“That location completely won us over,“ said Williams. “The building is a focal point in the downtown, and the shop creates an experience for all ages to enjoy and appreciate. Having an ice cream specialty shop in our downtown will draw people not just from Douglasville or Douglas County, but from surrounding counties as well”

Earlier this year, the Douglasville Downtown Development Authority and Main Street Office kicked off the 2015 ice cream shop campaign. The highlight of this year’s activities was the ice cream social held in July on National Ice Cream Day.

“Even with the rain, our community came out to help us not only celebrate National Ice Cream Day, but highlight the fact that we really want and need an ice cream shop in our downtown,“ said Main Street Manager April McKown. “In just a couple of hours, we handed out more than 700 servings of ice cream.”

In 2013, the Douglasville Downtown Development Authority held a strategic planning session to discuss short and long term goals for the downtown area. Many of the participants stated they wanted to see a coffee shop and ice cream shop in the downtown. With that direction, the downtown staff has successfully recruited several businesses to the area including a coffee shop.

“April and I, along with the DDA Board, are working hard to recruit someone who has a passion for owning an ice cream shop in a downtown,” said Williams. “We will continue to use social media to help spread the word and provide updates to the community.”
