UPDATE: Hundreds in Dunwoody Still Without Power Friday Morning

More than 47,000 residents were without power overnight in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. Georgia Power reports that as many as 150,000 metro area residents were without power during the peak of the outage.

Update at 11 p.m. Dunwoody Police announced that Vermack Road at Chamblee-Dunwoody Road had been closed around 3 p.m. Georgia Power announced that most power should be restored in Dunwoody by midnight with small pockets having power restored by midday Saturday.

 

Update at 10:05 a.m. Dunwoody Police and DeKalb Fire Rescue units were on the scene at the Dunwoody ACE Hardware on Dunwoody Village Parkway store after receiving calls about a small fire in the outdoor garden area.

According to the Dunwoody Police Department's Facebook page, the fire was likely caused by the store's generator's exhaust. Employees from ACE Hardware and nearby Goodyear were able to extinguish the fire.

From the Dunwoody PD Facebook page: "For those that will be running generators while the power is out please check for fire hazards. Good lesson for us all."

Update at 9:30 a.m. Hundreds in Dunwoody are still without power. Several repair crews are stationed around the city to repair downed power lines and trees. The traffic lights along Vermack Road and Mount Vernon Highway are still out. Drivers are asked to use caution as they travel along those roads.

Police, fire and work crews moved quickly to local streets, Thursday evening, as storms dropped trees and power lines throughout the city, but more than 47,000 residents were without power overnight in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. Georgia Power reports that as many as 150,000 metro area residents were without power during the peak of the outage.

In Sandy Springs, branches scattered Roswell Road shortly after 8 p.m. A section of trees parts had fallen onto the street, south of the Reserve Apartments at 7100 Roswell Road. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported a structure collapse on Tree Lodge Parkway. CBS Atlanta reported a tree fell on a Bridgewood Valley Road and also Lighthouse Point.

A police alert said utility crews, including Georgia Power, would work all night to restore services. The power outage included Roswell Road north of I-285 and several areas south starting from the Abernathy/Roswell Road intersection to Dunwoody Place.

Restaurants in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody that had power were packed with folks who did not have electricity at home.
