Fall Opening Planned for Walmart Neighborhood Market in Peachtree Corners

The Peachtree Corners site on Winters Chapel Road has been cleared, company now waiting for construction bids.

Walmart's plans to build a Neighborhood Market in Peachtree Corners are on track, said a company official, but it will likely be fall of 2013 before the new store opens.

"Our new Neighborhood Market on Winters Chapel Road is currently out for bids," said Bill Wertz, Director of Community & Media Relations. "Clearing of the site began in September, and we are hoping construction can start in the next couple of months."

Wertz said an definite opening date has not been set but it will likely be fall before the new facility is ready. When the new 40,000 square-foot store opens, it's expected to generate 90 new jobs.

Bryan Lackey, Gwinnett County's Planning and Development Director, said the the county has issued a building permit for the project and is waiting to hear from Walmart officials.

The Walmart store will sell groceries and also include a pharmacy, which is a welcome addition to the neighborhood after the old Supremo grocery store closed down suddenly without notice. The boarded up building had been empty for over a year before Walmart announced plans to build a Neighborhood Market.

When the Neighborhood Market was first proposed, construction was originally planned to begin in December 2012 and open in June, 2013. Lackey said weather delays were likely the reason why construction had not yet begun.
