Veterans Memorial Groundbreaking Postponed

Heavy rains have saturated the ground at future memorial site.

The groundbreaking for the Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Walk, originally set for Friday, July 19, has to be rescheduled to a later date still to be determined.

Recent and frequent heavy rain has saturated the ground at the ceremony’s planned location at Newtown Park, making it not conducive to the public. Also, the city and Johns Creeks Veterans Association hope to include the Alpha Aces, the city’s adopted Army unit, but the soldiers have just returned to Fort Stewart from Afghanistan.

The four-acre site will be a meditative memorial to veterans in a quiet portion of the park, consisting of a landscaped trail with black granite memorials for each major conflict dating to World War I. Completion is tentatively set for Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2014.

The JCVA is accepting donations for the walk to raise money for the project, for which no tax dollars are being used.
