Bay Creek Police Precinct, Alternate 911 Center Breaks Ground

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and Gwinnett County Police Department officials on Tuesday broke ground on the Bay Creek Police Precinct/Alternate 911 Center project.

The 4.2-acre site will be home to a 12,249-square-foot police precinct building that will serve the county’s growing southeastern region and a 6,236-square-foot alternate 911 center, which will be used as backup for the County’s main emergency 911 call center in Lawrenceville.

Police Chief Butch Ayers said, “When fully staffed, the police precinct will serve as the base of operations for 65 officers, dramatically increasing police presence in this area and reducing response times.”

The precinct building, which will serve as a base of operations for the county’s sixth precinct, will include command staff offices, an officers’ squad room,fitness center and evidence storage. It will also hold a community classroom where crime prevention officers can teach residents about safety, security, self-defense and emergency preparedness.

“The idea of having a precinct in this region has been around for years,” said District 3 Commissioner Tommy Hunter. “It took a backseat during the recession, but now, after years of planning, we’re ready to serve the 140,000 people and counting who live in this new precinct area with the additional police presence they’ve been asking for.”

Cooper & Company General Contractors will build the precinct and 911 center as designed by Precision Planning. The $12 million construction cost of the project is funded by the 2009, 2014 and 2017 SPLOST programs.

Board of Commissioners Chairman Charlotte Nash said, “I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the voters, who time and time again have voted to approve the SPLOST program. We appreciate the trust our residents have that we will use their pennies wisely to meet the capital needs of our growing population.”

The project will be complete in 2019. The new precinct and 911 center will be located at 185 Ozora Road in unincorporated Grayson, next to Bay Creek Park.
