Elementary School in Lawrenceville Briefly Evacuated Due to Odor of Smoke

No fire was found.

Students and staffΒ at Freeman's Mill Elementary on Old Peachtree Road briefly evacuated the building Tuesday morning, Oct. 8,Β after an odor of smoke was detected near the cafeteria.

Fire personnel from Station 18Β in HoschtonΒ and Station 27Β in DaculaΒ were among the units responding to the call.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesperson Sloan Roach said students and staff were out of the school for approximately 30 minutes while fire crews attempted to determine the origin of the smoke odor.

"They determined everything was okay," Roach said.Β "It appears the smoke may have come from an air conditioning unit on top of the school."

The students returned to class at 11:50 a.m.
