GBI Investigates Officer Shooting, Shot Man Identified

A Lawrenceville man was shot by several officers after assaulting his ex-wife and pointing a gun at officers, police say.

Gwinnett County, GA – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Gwinnett County Police Department Monday, to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation. No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 8 p.m., Gwinnett County Police officers responded to a domestic violence 911 call on Alex Lane in Lawrenceville. When officers arrived, the 911 caller was outside the residence; however, the subject, identified as William Payton, 57, was still located inside.

Eventually, Payton exited the residence with a firearm. Multiple officers shot at Payton during the encounter, striking him. Payton was transported to a local hospital and listed in critical condition. GCPD has obtained warrants for William Payton in connection to the domestic violence call.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney for review.
