Here are the top five stories in Loganville-Grayson today:

  1. Gwinnett County police Chief J.D. McClure released a statement on Friday, Oct. 28, about the recent violence in the youth community. He said, "Families are losing far too many children and teenagers due to senseless violence and actions that could have been prevented. I want our young people to develop the courage needed to walk away from confrontation." He also stated the police department will continue to work with the Gwinnett County Public Schools Police and encouraged anyone with information surrounding any gun-related crime to contact the sheriff's office. (WSB-TV Atlanta)
  2. Multiple fire crews from Walton County Fire Rescue and units from Georgia Forestry worked to put out a multi-acre woods fire in the area of the 4900 block of Ga. 20 south of Loganville from Friday, Oct. 28, into Saturday morning, Oct. 29. View the link for details. (Monroe Local)
  3. Two years ago, Gwinnett County had 23 ballot drop boxes; now there are only six. According to Gwinnett County's elections supervisor Zach Manifold, "We have 11 advance in-person voting sites, currently, and only six of them can have a drop box under the law because of the population requirement." Some call the new drop box provisions of the law "racially discriminatory." View the link to read more. (Public Integrity)
  4. The Loganville varsity football team, the Red Devils, won 31 to 22 against Flowery Branch on Friday, Oct. 28. The team secured second place in 8-AAAAA and will play in the upcoming state playoffs on Nov. 12. (Walton Tribune)

Patch deal of the day:

Good knives make all the difference in the kitchen, but you don’t need to overpay for them. Seido Japanese knives are made with strong high-carbon stainless steel (high-carbon knives are more durable and usually more expensive) and have an acute 15-degree angle for a noticeably sharper cutting face (most Western-style knives have edge angles of 25 degrees). For a limited time, Patch readers can get a 5-piece Seido Japanese master knife set for 71 percent off. At just under $70, this chef-quality set is perfect for any home cook and would also make a great gift for the holidays.
