Gwinnett Courthouse, County Offices Make Winter Weather Decision

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA – Due to anticipated inclement weather, Gwinnett County trials and hearings for Tuesday, Jan. 29 are canceled. Other Gwinnett County Government offices will be open during normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gwinnett County statement:

As temperatures drop, and we prepare for possible inclement weather, it's important to take care of yourself and your home. From fireplaces to high-tech generators, there are many ways to stay warm when freezing weather arrives. Follow these tips to stay warm and safe until spring comes.

Indoor Tips

• Regularly clean and inspect chimneys and fireplaces, and make sure the damper is open when in use. Never burn trash, paper, charcoal, or green wood in your fireplace, and dispose of ashes carefully.
• Make sure space heaters have an automatic shut-off feature, and have at least three feet of space around them while in use.
• Use kerosene heaters only in a well-ventilated room.
• Never use a generator inside or in an enclosed location, never plug a generator into a wall outlet, and before refueling, turn the generator off and let it cool. The primary hazards of portable generators are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock, and fire.

Outdoor tips

• Never drive or walk on frozen bodies of water. The ice is thinner than you think.
• Monitor road conditions before you head out.
• Winterize your vehicle. Keep your fuel tank at least half full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.
• Bring your pets inside. Even with their winter fur, dogs and cats are susceptible to cold.
