Gwinnett Schools Make Decision On Tuesday Classes

BREAKING: A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Fulton County, metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Gwinnett County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 29, due to the threat of inclement weather and the possibility of black ice forming in areas of the county. The day will be a Digital Learning Day for students and staff. 12-month staff should report at their normal start time unless conditions do not permit safe travel.

Since Gov. Brian Kemp has announced state government offices will close Tuesday, Jan. 29 due to winter weather expected to move into the Georgia, the Fulton County School System said it will follow suit and shut down operations for that day.

"The governor has closed all state offices for Tuesday, Jan. 29, based on a winter storm watch," the school system said on its Facebook page. "Given the risk associated with ice, the timing of a potential event, and the impact it may have on traffic, the weather team erred on the side of safety in closing Fulton County Schools and all administrative offices (for) Tuesday, January 29, 2019."

Atlanta Public Schools has also announced it will close up shop on Tuesday, as a Winter Storm Watch will go into effect from 4 a.m to 10 a.m. Tuesday. Fulton County also noted its operations, which includes its courthouse, will also be closed Tuesday due to the predicted weather. However, "mission-essential personnel" and employees assigned to public safety agencies will report for duty, the county said. Jurors should not report for duty, and they can call the number on their jury summons for more information.

The National Weather Service said up to two inches of snow is expected within the watch area, "with localized higher totals possible in far north GA and higher elevations."

Of course, these snow accumulations will make for dangerous traveling conditions, and black ice is a threat even in areas where snow doesn't stick to the ground, the weather service added.
