Walnut Grove Launches CodeRED Emergency Notification System
The nearby city recently adopted the service, which is free to residents.

Below is a press release from the city of Walnut Grove.
The city of Walnut Grove has recently opted to participate in an Emergency Notification System called CodeRED.
This is a free service that gives the city of Walnut Grove the ability to quickly provide emergency telephone, text or email notices to its citizens, according to a news release. CodeRED notifies the participants of this service of emergency situations, general information about incidents, or weather notifications, depending on their choice.
Emergency notifications include chemical releases, evacuations notices or natural disasters. They only will be initiated if there is an immediate risk or threat to health or safety.
General notices may be about natural gas leaks, utility outages, water main breaks, emergency street closing, missing persons, crime alerts and any other information that may be of importance to the citizens. These notifications can be any public safety-related alert not deemed an imminent risk to health safety. Citizens must opt-in for this service on the signup Web page, which can be found at the bottom of this article.
Weather alerts are specific tornado, severe thunderstorms and flash flood warnings (not watches) and come directly via the National Weather Service. Citizens must opt-in for this service, too.
If a critical event occurs that's known to be immediately dangerous to life or health, an emergency notice will be used to provide information on what action needs to be taken and other updates as needed.
"The city of Walnut Grove wants to reach everyone possible in the event of an emergency," says the news release.
Therefore, the city pre-populated the CodeRED system with publicly available phone numbers and addresses. This means that residents who have a cell phone as a home phone; possess an unlisted, unpublished or private number; or have a new number are not in the system.
