Here are the top three stories in Macon today:

  1. The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning, May 3, on the 2900 block of Churchill Street in Macon. Two men were taken to a local Macon hospital after being shot several times. The 35-year-old victim is listed in critical condition and the 51-year-old victim is listed in stable condition. According to reports, the suspect "came up and opened fire" on a gathering on the street. (wgxa.tv)
  2. On Tuesday, May 2, Macon-Bibb County leaders celebrated the demolition of the 500th blighted house in only two years. To make way for the Mill Hill East Macon Arts Village and to help create the proposed Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, two houses were demolished in the 300-block of DeWitt Street in east Macon.   3. A new transitional academy for dyslexic students, the Roberts Academy at Mercer University, will open in Macon in the fall of 2024. The academy will teach children with dyslexia in grades two through five in small classes using the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is "a multi-sensory, structured, and diagnostic way to teach those with dyslexia."   • On Wednesday afternoon, May 3, a South Macon home was heavily damaged by a fire. Macon-Bibb firefighters worked hard to get the fire under control and officials are investigating the cause of the fire. (wgxa.tv)
  • On Tuesday night, May 2, a Macon woman riding a moped was killed by a hit-and-run driver. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information regarding the vehicle or the driver to call 478-751-7500. (WSB Atlanta)
