2 Dead In Apparent Homicide-Suicide In Powder Springs: Cobb PD

Police said a man was in a dispute with three of his family members that grew into a physical assault, and eventually gunfire.

COBB COUNTY, GA — A man and his mother are both dead after a domestic dispute and negotiations with police officers outside a Cobb County home Tuesday night, Cobb police said.

Cobb police officers received reports of a person barricaded inside a Powder Springs home, who had fired shots at family members, a Cobb police spokesperson said in a news release.

Officers arrived around 7:55 p.m. Tuesday night and found that Jeffrey Lawrence Bishop, 50, was in a dispute with family members "that grew into a physical assault" on Michael, Andy and Lillian Bishop. At some point following the assault, Jeffrey got ahold of a gun and shot at his three relatives.

Andy and Michael escaped to a neighbor's home and called the police. It was not immediately clear at first if Lillian had made it out of the home, or if she was still inside and being held hostage, police said.

SWAT officers and Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) members were called to the scene, and negotiators worked "for an extended time" to get Jeffrey to surrender peacefully.

"Eventually, SWAT members executed a tactical response and discovered that Lillian had been shot much earlier and was already deceased," police said. "Jeffrey was found in another part of the home with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Cobb County Police Department's Crimes Against Persons unit at 770-499-3945.
