Cobb Schools Monitoring Anticipated Winter Storm

Metro Atlanta and north Georgia could receive up to 2 inches of snow or more this week, according to the National Weather Service.

MARIETTA, GA -- Cobb school officials said they are continuing to monitor the anticipated winter storm that could dump as much as 2 inches of snow throughout metro Atlanta and north Georgia. Parents, teachers and students can expect an update from the school system, "at the very latest" at 5 pm Monday.

As tens of thousands of people converge on Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for north Georgia, including all of metro Atlanta, from late Monday night through Tuesday evening. A winter storm watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

According to latest forecast, rain is predicted on Tuesday before 4 pm, then an increasing chance of rain and snow with a high near 43. On Tuesday night, temperatures are expected to plummet to the low 20s, accompanied by a 30 percent chance of snow before 7 pm.

Sunny conditions are forecast for Wednesday, with a high near 43. On Super Bowl Sunday, forecasters are predicting a 30 percent chance of rain, with a high near 57.

Cobb County leaders are expecting many of the thousands of people coming to Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII to either fly into and out off, and stay in the county. A full house is expected at the Cobb County International Airport, where incoming aircraft will take up every available inch of tarmac space on McCollum Field. More than 200 jets are expected to fly into the airport, increasing the traffic by over 700% during the five-day period.

The only NFL-sanctioned event outside of Atlanta will take place at the Cobb Galleria Centre on February 2. The "Taste of Atlanta" will feature celebrity chefs from each NFL city and benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

The NFL has booked rooms in 20 Cobb hotels, representing over 8,000 room nights. All other hotel rooms are expected to be booked for the weekend.
