'A Misrepresentation': San Franciscans Ticked Off At Anti-Ossoff Ad: ICYMI

San Franciscans criticize anti-Ossoff as stereotypical of the city's residents.

MARIETTA, GA -- For weeks now, a Republican-backed Super PAC's ad portraying San Francisco residents in tow with Democrat Jon Ossoff has been playing around the clock in metro Atlanta. The ad, which may well run on Georgia television until the June 20 6th District runoff election, shows hippie types and others "thanking" Georgia for supporting Ossoff, the 30-year-old investigative filmmaker running against 58-year-old Republican Karen Handel.

The spot was paid for by the Congressional Leadership Fund, which is linked to House Speaker Paul Ryan, who campaigned Monday in Dunwoody for Handel. While the ad is meant to show how Ossoff's campaign is being propped up by outside money, namely Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, many in the Northern Californian city say the ad -- and the characters they use in it -- goes too far. “They’re playing to a stereotype,” Barbara Deuel, 58, told the Los Angeles Times. “The idea that anything goes, we’re all heathens and drug addicts.”

The ad's use of a cable car with Ossoff's image on it has also riled staffers in the city's San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

“This is a misrepresentation,” SFMTA spokesman Paul Rose told the San Francisco Chronicle. He said that the SFMTA forbids political ads as a matter of policy.

“The cable car is an iconic landmark that attracts people and attention from all over the world,” Rose said. “And I think we can all agree that it is best left un-Photoshopped.” He told the Chronicle that the SFMTA will send a cease-and-desist request to the PAC.

A spokeswoman for the Congressional Leadership Fund said the PAC had filled out the proper paperwork to incorporate the cable car in its ad and sent the agency a check for $623.

The 6th District race is neck in neck with five weeks to go. It is being closely watched by Washington and much of the nation as many see it as a litmus test of Trump's ideals.

Gov. Nathan Deal called a special election for the 6th District House of Representatives seat in February, when then-U.S. Rep. Tom Price vacated his seat to become the nation's health secretary.
