South Cobb Water Plant Under Repairs | Crews Moving In Equipment
A New Year's Eve shutdown caused overflow spills into Nickajack Creek and the Chattahoochee River.

AUSTELL, GA -- Cobb water crews are still clearing a flooded pump station and relieving pressure on the South Cobb tunnel. The New Year's Eve event shut down the pumps that normally take water out of the tunnel to feed the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility. The water system has arranged with a contractor to find a supply of additional pumps that will be positioned at a nearby pump shaft. That will allow crews to pull water out of the flooded facility and stop the overflow.
A combination of rainwater, runoff, and wastewater has been overflowing into the nearby Nickajack Creek since shortly after the incident.
Crews are currently positioning materials and equipment on site, and pumping will start as soon as possible. The cause of the "significant" event that flooded the pumps is still a mystery, and the investigation can only start once the water is removed.

This incident is unrelated to the county's drinking water supply. That system remains fully functional.
