COBB COUNTY, GA — Sprayberry High School's 2021 high school football season opener, slated for this Friday, has been canceled due to rising COVID-19 cases at Sprayberry, according to a parent email from Riverwood International Charter School.
This is the second high school football game to be canceled because of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, with the first in DeKalb County. Sprayberry was set to play Riverwood at 7:30 p.m. at Riverwood's stadium.
"Unfortunately, Sprayberry High School is unable to participate in the opening football game this Friday, August 20, at Riverwood due to an increased number of COVID[-19] cases at Sprayberry," Riverwood Principal Kindra Smith said in an email to parents Wednesday.

In DeKalb County, the McNair High School vs. Forest Park High School game, scheduled Friday, was canceled as well after someone in the McNair program tested positive for COVID-19. Riverwood will now play Forest Park, Smith said.
It was not clear if the Sprayberry game was canceled because of a COVID-19 case within the football program, or if it was a precaution due to rising COVID-19 cases across Cobb County.
